How Do You Install Crown Molding on a Horizontal Ceiling?

Crown Molding made easy. We have taken all of the guess work out of cutting crown molding. Chapter 4 in our new 2nd edition book deals with installing crown molding on a horizontal ceiling.

In today’s modern construction, corners are often built at unusual angles. For example, if you measure a corner angle of 146° and were using crown molding with a spring angle of 38°, you would just simply look up the miter and blade tilt in Chapter 4 or the crown molding table, page 124 thru 141. You would set your compound miter saw for a miter of 10.7° and a blade tilt of 13.3° and cut a perfect compound miter joint.

What you will find in other books are instructions that say “for those corners that are not 90° just adjust your saw until you get the corners to fit”. Here is where everyone loses it. You have created a huge pile of firewood from your expensive crown molding and now have an ulcer and give up.

Let’s start by explaining just the basic compound miter cuts to install crown molding for a horizontal ceiling.

This is the most common type of crown moulding cut. The crown runs along the wall and ceiling and will make a horizontal turn of some angle in a corner and continue on along the ceiling. The ceiling is horizontal but the corners are almost never exactly 90°.

Standard Corner Turns consist of two types, Inside Corners & Outside Corners. (These are cut somewhat different, as we will demonstrate.)
Inside Corners– Corners that measure between 0° to 180°.
Outside Corners– Corners that measure between 180° to 360°.


Crown Molding Inside Corner Turns

Left-hand Side Piece of Crown Moulding

  1. Measure the inside corner where the crown will be installed with your True Angle® Tool and obtain the miter and blade tilt settings from either the book, the Crown Molding Table or the Excel Program.
  2. Turn the compound miter saw table counterclockwise to the correct miter setting and tilt the saw to your left to the correct blade tilt angle.
  3. Place the top of the crown molding face up, flat on the table, with the top of the crown moulding next to the fence and make the cut.
  4. When looking at the crown molding in the position that it will be installed, it will always look like this.
  5. You will always be able to see the saw cut, and the pointed end will always be at the bottom of the crown moulding. (This is the left-hand side piece for an inside corner.)

  1. Notice the changes made to the compound miter saw.
  2. The blade tilt position did not change, but the miter table was rotated clockwise to the correct miter setting opposite the previous setting for the left-hand side piece.
  3. Also now the bottom of the crown moulding (instead of the top) is next to the compound miter saw fence, lying face up and flat on the table. Make the cut.

  1. Notice again: The bottom of the crown molding was against the fence for the right-hand side piece.

  1. All inside corner pieces will look similar to these.
  2. When looking at the crown moulding like it will be installed, the pointed ends will always be the bottom of the crown molding (next to the wall) and you will be able to see the saw cut surface.
  3. The crown moulding is ready to install.

Crown Molding Outside Corner Turns

  1. Measure the outside corner where the crown will be installed with your True Angle® Tool and obtain the miter and blade tilt settings from either the book, Crown Molding Table or the Excel Program.
  2. Turn the miter saw table clockwise to the correct miter setting and tilt the saw to your left to the correct blade tilt angle.
  3. Place the crown moulding face up, flat on the table, and with the bottom of the crown molding next to the fence. Make the cut.
  4. You will not be able to see the saw cut, and the pointed end will always be the top of the crown moulding. (This is the left-hand-side piece for the outside corner.)

  1. Notice the changes made to the compound miter saw.
  2. The blade tilt position did not change but the miter table was rotated counterclockwise to the correct miter setting opposite the previous setting for the left-side piece.
  3. Also now the top of the crown molding (instead of the bottom) is next to the compound miter saw fence, lying face up and flat on the table.

  1. You will not be able to see the saw cut and the pointed end will always be the top of the crown moulding. (This is the right-side piece for the outside corner.)

  1. All outside corner cuts will look similar to these.
  2. When looking at the crown molding like it will be installed, the pointed ends will always be the top of the crown moulding (next to the ceiling) and you will not be able to see the saw cut surface.
  3. The crown molding is ready to install.
  4. Compare the differences between crown moulding cuts. This is the correct cut for an inside corner. (Notice the saw cut surface shows and the pointed ends are at the bottom of the crown molding).

How to measure the length of the Crown Molding.

Inside Corner to Inside Corner: Measure the distance from the inside corner to the other inside corner and cut the crown moulding as shown

Inside Corner to Outside Corner: Measure the distance from the inside corner to the outside corner and cut the crown molding as shown. Note: On outside corner marking of the crown, use the back side of the crown to place the length mark and cut to this. This is necessary because of the blade tilt angle. The backside of the crown moulding (outside corner) must meet the corner of the wall.

Outside Corner to Outside Corner: Measure the distance from the outside corner to the outside corner and cut the crown molding as shown.(See Note on marking for outside corners above.)


That’s all there is to it!

You now have the basics and, with the Crown Molding & Trim book and a set of True Angle® Tools, you can install Crown Molding in any room of your home.

How to Install Crown Molding on Kitchen Cabinets

Crown molding on cabinets is installed the same as crown molding on a wall. The bottom of the crown is held firm on the cabinet face and installed in that position. You can attach the crown several different ways. If your cabinets extend up to your ceiling, you will place the crown like you would on a wall and ceiling setup. If your cabinets do not reach the ceiling, you will simply attach the crown to the top of the cabinet.

 

Cabinets that touch the ceiling

 


All of these turn of the crown are turns in the horizontal plane. Your crown slope angle will be 90 deg minus your crown spring angle. Glue all joints as you install.

Cabinets that do not touch the ceiling

 

For these cabinets, you will need to install a simple nailing block to the top of the cabinet every three feet to hold the crown firm. Cut the nailing block to the crown spring angle. Glue all joints as you install.

Cabinets that touch the ceiling
All of these turn of the crown are turns in the horizontal plane. Your crown slope angle will be 90 deg minus your crown spring angle. Glue all joints as you install.

Chapter 5 of our new 2nd edition book covers cathedral/vaulted ceilings. We have provided many examples and photographs that will explain how you can easily install crown molding. There are three different ways you can make a turn with your crown, horizontal turns, vertical turns and ceiling turns. We have provided examples in Chapter 5 of when and how you should make each. 

Here are just a few examples of what you can do.

Take a close look at the above picture of a typical cathedral ceiling. Details are on page 42 in our new 2nd edition book.

  • Joint “A” is a standard inside corner. The horizontal turn crown slope angle for joint “A” is 52 deg. (Joint “A” is a horizontal turn of the crown molding)
  • Measure the angle between the adjacent walls in the corner with your True Angle® Tool and, using the Crown Molding & Trim book, Compound Miter Chart, Crown Molding Table or the Excel Program, look up the miter and blade tilt to cut the crown molding. Use your crown molding templates to make sure you have set up you saw correctly.

  • This is the left-hand piece, inside corner, horizontal turn that will go in the corner at joint “A”.
  • For and inside corner horizontal turn you will always be able to see the saw cut and the pointed end will always be at the bottom of the crown molding.
  • Cut the mating right-hand piece using the same saw settings. This is the crown moulding that goes from joint “A” to “B”.

  • Joint “B” is an outside corner, vertical turn. (The crown turns up and continues on to joint “C”.)note, in this photo: The right end of the crown is the good piece. This is the short piece that goes from joint “A” to joint “B”. (I am now cutting the left-hand side of joint “B”)
  • Use your True Angle® Tool and measure the angle between the wall and the ceiling, then add 90 degrees to it to get the actual corner angle for joint “B”. (i.e. Our example is a 20-degree sloped ceiling; therefore, the angle between the wall and the ceiling is 110 degrees. The corner angle for joint “B” is 110+90=200 deg.)
  • The bottom of the crown is next to the fence and the top will be cut so it is 0 inches long (makes a point). Again, it is very important to use your crown molding templates to make sure you are cutting the correct type of cut.
  • Using 200 deg. as the corner angle and a vertical turn crown slope angle of 38 deg. you can obtain the miter and blade tilt from the Compound Miter Chart, Crown Molding Table or the Compound Miter Excel Program. (When you are turning the crown molding up or down, the crown slope angle is always equal to the crown spring angle.
